MPP '25 Al-Amin Ahamed on Why the Ideology Behind Conversion Therapy Still Persists | Policy Magazine

Published: 14 July 2025

July 14, 2025 | In an article for Policy Magazine, MPP '25 Al-Amin Ahamed examined the gap between Canada’s 2022 federal ban on conversion therapy and the ongoing harm caused by its underlying ideology. While Bill C-4 made it a criminal offence to attempt to change or suppress someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity, Ahamed warns that the ideology behind these practices has simply evolved—adopting new language and methods that fall outside the law’s reach.

Ahamed highlights how terms like “healing trauma” or “living faithfully” are now used to mask identity-suppressing interventions, particularly targeting trans, racialized, and marginalized communities. These covert practices, though harder to prosecute, continue to cause serious mental health impacts and reinforce the idea that queer and trans identities are disordered. Ahamed argues that while banning conversion therapy was a major step, lasting change requires a broader commitment to protecting 2SLGBTQ+ people from all forms of identity-based harm.
