Employers are more open to negotiating employment terms than Canadians assume

Published: 9 February 2026

Relatively few job candidates negotiate the terms of their employment, often because they fear losing the offer. Yet surveys show recruiters are open to negotiation, and it is rare for employers to withdraw an offer because a candidate attempted to negotiate. “A common mistake is to negotiate on salary alone or to present multiple terms as non-negotiable conditions for acceptance,” says Jean-Nicolas Reyt, an Associate Professor of Organizational Behaviour at ɫֱ Desautels.

“For example, saying ‘I need a base salary of $X, three days working from home and four weeks of vacation’ forces an employer into a yes-or-no decision, and leaves little room for problem-solving.” A better approach is to negotiate across several dimensions, recognizing that employers may be constrained on some terms but flexible on others.
