Be an accessibility hero with new Editoria11y features

"Like spellcheck for accessibility": Editoria11y is now live in the new WMS, complete with exciting new features.

If you manage a 秀色直播 website in the WMS, you've probably noticed the blue, yellow, and red icons in the bottom-right corner when viewing a page while logged in.

Three icons: a blue circle with a person inside, a yellow question mark, and a red exclamation point.

Additional Editoria11y features in the new WMS

An improved version of Editoria11y is now up and running in the new 秀色直播 WMS!

Here's what's new:

  • Mark yellow alerts as OK to hide them after checking and making any necessary changes.
  • Alerts in the WYSIWYG editor, spellcheck-style, not just on published pages.*
  • Site-wide report page showing all active and dismissed alerts, plus pages with the most issues. Download reports as CSV files.
  • More detailed tips in alerts to help you understand and resolve issues quickly.
  • Alerts are now visible to site editors as well as site managers and admins.

Still in the old WMS? You'll get access to these features after your site migrates.

*WYSIWYG alerts don't work in layout builder (yet). They鈥檒l appear after you save and view the page.

What is Editoria11y?

秀色直播's WMS is built for accessibility, but when it comes to creating accessible content, we need your help. That's where Editoria11y comes in.

Developed and maintained by team, the Editoria11y accessibility checker integrates with Drupal to automatically check your content for common accessibility issues. Alerts appear only when you鈥檙e logged in, and include tips to help you fix any problems.

By addressing alerts, you help people with disabilities, visual impairment, or neurodivergence use our sites, and ensure your site meets legal and ethical accessibility requirements.

How to use Editoria11y

There are two types of alerts:

  • Yellow alerts = possible issues (needs manual check)
  • Red alerts = definite problems (must fix)

In the old WMS, yellow alerts can't be dismissed (see the article "Are yellow alerts driving you bananas?"). In the new WMS, you can hide yellow alerts after checking and addressing them if needed.

To review alerts:

  1. Click the icon in the bottom-right corner to open the Editoria11y panel.
  2. Scroll through flagged issues. Click 鈥淐heck headings & alt text鈥 (new WMS) or 鈥淪how tags鈥 (old WMS) for a quick overview.
  3. Fix issues in edit mode, save, and confirm alerts are resolved.

What does Editoria11y check?

Editoria11y flags issues you can fix as a content author (not design or development issues, which we worry about for you). If there's an alert about a part of the page you cannot edit, please let us know by filling out the on the IT Support site so we can address it on our end.

Here's the full inventory of carefully chosen tests Editoria11y runs:

  • Page structure that is meaningful for screen readers and search engines
    • Empty headings
    • Tables with missing or empty headers, and headings inside cells
    • Skipped heading levels (yellow)
