Michael Mackey is the Joseph Mo rley Drake Professor of Physiology and a member of the Departments of Phys ics and Mathematics. Trained in physics\, mathematics and physiology\, he has been a long-time advocate of interdisciplinary research and education\ , developing the Joint Major Programmes in Physiology & Physics and Physio logy & Mathematics at Šćɫֱ²„ long before other universities realized their importance. His research is largely focused on problems involving cellula r replication and maturation (especially in hematology) and the dynamics o f gene regulation. Some of his work\, however\, has nothing to do with bio logy but is related to fundamental problems in the foundations of physics. He does much of his thinking about science while bike riding. A receptio n will follow the lecture.
