Danielle Vlaho (Academic Associate), Joe Iantomasi (Clerical), Luisa Sabaz (Management), and Badawy Sha’ath (Technical) have been named recipients of the Faculty of Science Excellence Awards.

These awards, announced at the Faculty of Science Council meeting on May 20th, recognize the outstanding contributions made by members of the Faculty’s administrative and support staff during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Meghomita Das, a recent PhD graduate of ��ɫֱ��’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, first discovered a passion for science communication in the wake of a natural disaster. When Das was a high school student in India, an earthquake in nearby Nepal impacted both countries.

Geography Department celebrates 80th anniversary

��ɫֱ��’s Department of Geography turns 80 this year!

This milestone marks the anniversary of George Kimble’s appointment as ��ɫֱ��’s first Professor of Geography and Department Chair on January 1, 1945.

Kimble, who had previously been a meteorologist with the Royal Navy, was allocated two rooms in the Arts Building (rooms 30 and 38) by the Faculty of Arts and Science to lay the foundation for the new department. A few months later, F.K. Hare was appointed as ��ɫֱ��’s second Professor of Geography (eventually becoming Dean of Arts and Science in 1961).

Congratulations to Jérôme Waldispühl and Attila Szantner (Computer Science), The Eclipse Task Force (Physics), and Andrew Gonzalez (Biology), who are among this year's winners of the President’s Prize for Public Engagement through Media!

In announcing the winners and runners-up, President and Vice-Chancellor Deep Saini noted that they were among a strong field of applicants spanning all 12 Faculties.

“This is further evidence that the sharing of knowledge and a love of learning are core ��ɫֱ�� values,” he said.

��ɫֱ�� provides a top-tier education in a wide variety of fields, as highlighted in the World University Rankings by Subject 2025, released on January 22 by Times Higher Education (THE).

��ɫֱ�� ranks among the top 90 in the world in all of the 11 subjects assessed, placing six subjects in the top 50. The number of institutions of higher education considered varied by discipline, from 389 for Law to 1,488 for Engineering.
