Mechanical properties of the environment also affect cell differentiation\, shape\, proliferation\, migration and apoptosis. The imp ortance of physical forces and shape in development and function of organi sms was recognized a long time ago\, and formed the discipline of ‘physics in biology’ or ‘physiology’. Quantifying these forces at a cellular and s ub-cellular level has\, however\, only recently become possible with the a dvent of nanotechnology. In this presentation I will concentrate on introd ucing the capabilities of one of these force sensing methods - atomic forc e microscopy (AFM) - which allows nm scale imaging. In addition\, AFM is c apable of quantifying mechanical properties on single molecular bonds up t o whole cells. Finally\, manipulation of cells such as live neurons will b e introduced\, demonstrating how using forces can be used to engineer func tional neuronal networks.\n DTSTART:20180503T160000Z DTEND:20180503T170000Z LOCATION:1027\, McIntyre Medical Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3G 1Y6\, 3655 promenade Sir William Osler SUMMARY:QLS/CAMBAM Seminar - Dr. Peter Grutter URL:/qls/channels/event/qlscambam-seminar-dr-peter-gru tter-286942 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
