Computer science and engineering currently set the agenda in this field\, sidelining mathem atics to a large extent. This talk\, however\, will highlight that mathema tics has a lot to offer. We will introduce mathematical guarantees that pr ovide deep insights into the inner workings of AI\, and we will show how s tatistical principles can make AI more efficient. More generally\, we will discuss the role of mathematics\, especially statistics\, in AI and data science.\n\nSpeaker\n\nJohannes is the chair of Mathematics for Data-Drive n Methods at University of Hamburg. His research journey includes ETH Zuri ch\, UC Berkeley\, Cornell University\, and University of Washington. More over\, Johannes was Visiting Professor at UC Louvain\, University of Hong Kong\, and University Gustave Eiffel. He is an associate editor of the Ele ctronic Journal of Statistics\, Sankhya A\, and the Canadian Journal of St atistics. Johannes is a prominent spokesperson of data science and AI in G ermany: in addition to his podcast and his presence in social and classica l media\, he is a founding member of Hamburg Virtual Initiative for Scienc e & Technology in AI\, a member of Kiez of Computing and Data Science\, an d the outreach delegate for mathematics at University of Hamburg. He also organizes workshops and is a keynote speaker on the topic.\n\nhttps://mcgi ll.zoom.us/j/89838224036\n\nMeeting ID: 898 3822 4036\n\nPasscode: None\n DTSTART:20250228T203000Z DTEND:20250228T213000Z LOCATION:Room 1104\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Johannes Lederer (University of Hamburg) URL:/mathstat/channels/event/johannes-lederer-universi ty-hamburg-363832 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
