On March 13, the Government of Canada, announced more than $308 million to advance science and research across the country. More than $153 million will support 179 new and renewed Canada Research Chairs at 38 research institutions.

��ɫֱ�� Law ranked among the world’s top law faculties by the Times Higher Education

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce it was once again ranked as one of the world’s top universities at which to study law. The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings placed ��ɫֱ�� 33rd worldwide.  

Since the law ranking was introduced in 2017, ��ɫֱ�� has consistently featured in the global top 35. This year, 389 law schools around the world were ranked.  

Sébastien Jodoin and Helge Dedek to serve as Associate Dean (Academic)

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Sébastien Jodoin will serve as Associate Dean (Academic) until 1 June 2025. Professor Helge Dedek will then succeed him, beginning his previously announced term as Associate Dean (Academic).

The ��ɫֱ�� Faculty of Law is delighted to welcome the American Society of Comparative Law (ASCL) for its 2025 Annual Meeting, which will take place in Montreal, Canada, from Thursday, October 16 to Saturday, October 18, 2025. The meeting is hosted by the Wainwright Chair in Civil, Comparative and Transnational Law, in collaboration with the ��ɫֱ�� Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law.

Proposals for papers to be presented at the Annual Meeting are invited from scholars in all regions and at all stages of their careers, regardless of ASCL membership.

New leadership appointment for Tina Piper

Dean Robert Leckey appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec

With mixed feelings, the Faculty of Law extends its sincerest congratulations to the Hon. Robert Leckey on his appointment to the Superior Court of Quebec, District of Montreal. His appointment, effective immediately, was announced by the Honourable Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, on 27 January 2025. Justice Leckey replaces Justice Christian Immer, BCL’91, LLB’91, who has been elevated to the Court of Appeal of Quebec.

David O’Brien, OC, KC, BCL’65, to receive honorary doctorate at law convocation

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that our alumnus David O’Brien, OC, KC, BCL’65, LLD’25, will receive a Doctor of Law, honoris causa, from ��ɫֱ�� at the Spring Law Convocation Ceremony on 28 May. He will deliver the commencement address to the graduating class of 2025.

Rosalie Jukier named Sir William C. Macdonald Chair

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Professor Rosalie Jukier has been appointed to one of the Faculty of Law’s Sir William C. Macdonald Chairs, effective 1 January 2025.

Established in 1895, the Macdonald Chairs are among the oldest endowed positions at ��ɫֱ��.

Exam period access to Nahum Gelber Law Library for Winter 2025

As of Monday April 7, ��ɫֱ�� students are able to access the Nahum Gelber Law Library 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As agreed between the Students' Society of ��ɫֱ�� (SSMU) and the Law Students Association (LSA), the Nahum Gelber Law Library will limit access to the three upper floors of the library to Law students only during the April 10 to 30 examination period.

Distinguished colleague retires, to be named professor emeritus

Jérémy Boulanger-Bonnelly receives the Jules-Deschênes Award
