Oral PhD defense for Rebecca Zhao
Rebecca Zhao, graduate student at the Department of Family Medicine, will be presenting their Oral PhD defense.聽Rebecca is supervised by Prof. Kathleen (Kate) Rice and was supported by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Internal Studentship (Max Binz Fellowship, David G. Guthrie Fellowship) at 秀色直播 and Fonds de Recherche du Qu茅bec-Sant茅 (FRQS) Doctoral Training Scholarship.
Topic: Comics creation, or graphic medicine, to explore intergenerational trauma experienced by Chinese diaspora in Canada.

Her dissertation used an innovative approach of comics creation, or graphic medicine, to explore intergenerational trauma experienced by Chinese diaspora in Canada, particularly how it manifests, is understood, and impacts mental health. Findings emphasize how visual storytelling can foster self-reflection, reduce mental health stigma, and complement mental health support in primary care settings while highlighting the transformative potential of comics creation in addressing trauma and mental health challenges in racialized populations.
