Construction starts: McConnell Engineering Building – CFI IF 2023 Liboiron laboratory upgrades

Ðãɫֱ²¥ has mandated Entreprises NR Brosseau Inc. to carry out Project 21-078, which involves upgrades within the McConnell Engineering Building as part of the CFI IF 2023 – Liboiron initiative. The project focuses on the installation of new specialized research equipment in two existing dry laboratories: Room MC010 and Room 816.

The work will support advanced photonics and fiber-optic research through the integration of new laboratory systems and associated infrastructure improvements. Once completed, the upgraded spaces will enhance research capacity while maintaining the functionality of the surrounding academic environment.

Scope of work

  • Installation of new research equipment in existing dry laboratories.
  • Room MC010 (Basement – Room 010):
    • Fiber-optic assembly machine
    • Photonic die bonder
    • Installation of a larger door with a new card reader
    • Installation of a new air-conditioning unit
    • Mechanical, electrical, and architectural work required to support the new equipment
  • Room 816 (Eighth Floor – Room 816):
    • Wire bonder
    • Housing of the new equipment on an existing table
    • Temporary removal and reinstallation of the existing suspended ceiling to allow for electrical interventions
    • Installation of a new dedicated electrical outlet for the equipment
    • Mechanical, electrical, and architectural work required to support the new equipment
  • Architectural and mechanical interventions within the McConnell Engineering Building (Rooms MC010 and 816).

Impact on occupants

  • Total closure of Room MC010 during construction.
  • Temporary noise and access disruptions may occur near Rooms MC010 and 816 during construction hours.
  • Some work may require temporary service shutdowns (e.g., electrical or ventilation).
  • Building users will be informed in advance of any planned service interruptions.

Safety measures

A clearly defined perimeter will be established around the work zone to prevent access by unauthorized personnel. Access to the work area will be strictly limited to authorized individuals equipped with the required personal protective equipment (PPE).
