These 'biological invasions' can cause\nextinctions\, disrupt ecosystems\, alter natural resources\, threaten\nhuman health\, and even pose national security problems. Despite\nthese risks\, some ecologists have advocated planned invasions to\nrescue species threatened by climate change. Termed 'assisted\ncolonization'\, their proposal involves moving potentially larg e\nnumbers of species to favorable habitats well beyond their native\nrang e. This Cutting Edge Lecture in\nScience evaluates this controversial stra tegy and the ecological\nand societal impacts of invasions worldwide.\n\nA nthony Ricciardi is an associate professor in both the Redpath\nMuseum and the 秀色直播 School of Environment\, where he teaches\ncourses on animal di versity\, environmental science\, and the ecology\nof species invasions.聽 He received his PhD from 秀色直播 (in\n1997)\, and was an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at Universit茅 Laval and\na Killam Fellow at Dalhousie University. He is an associate editor\nfor the journal Diversity and Distributions and the\njournal Biological Invasions\, and he serves on the\nscientific comm ittee of the Canadian Aquatic Invasive Species\nNetwork - a national NSERC -funded research group that assesses the\nrisks of invasion in Canada's la kes\, rivers and coastal waters.\nInitiated in 2003 with the express purpo se of fostering\ncommunication between scientists in different disciplines as well\nas between scientists and the public\, Cutting\nEdge Lectures in Science are made possible through\nthe generous support of Faculty of Med ical Sciences (Professor\nMarianna Newkirk\, Associate Dean Research)\, Fa culty of Arts\n(Professor Christopher Manfredi\, Dean)\, Faculty of Agricu ltural and\nEnvironmental Sciences (Professor Chandra Madramootoo\, Dean)\ ,\nFaculty of Science (Professor Martin Grant\, Dean) and the Centre\nfor Applied Mathematics in Bioscience and Medicine (CAMBAM).
