Nine ��ɫֱ��ians appointed to the Order of Canada

Neuroscientist Alan Evans and music performance scholar Michael McMahon among ��ɫֱ�� community members recognized for exceptional accomplishments and service

Nine members of the ��ɫֱ�� community have been appointed to the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.

Among the honorees are two ��ɫֱ�� faculty members, Professors Alan Evans (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) and Michael McMahon (Schulich School of Music).

In a recent article for their What's In My Cart? series, the Globe and Mail profiles 72-year-old Julia Common, a beekeeper based in Delta, B.C. She says she was hooked on bees the first time her hands entered a hive, when she was only 21 and enrolled in agricultural studies at ��ɫֱ��’s Macdonald Campus, near her hometown of Montreal.

But in large cities, there’s often ice available somewhere, and Jonathan Azouri (BCom’16) spotted an opportunity. The co-founder and CEO of CatchCorner by Sports Illustrated, an app that allows users to book sports facilities, launched it in Toronto in 2019 and is now making it available in markets like New York, Los Angeles, and Boston.

ESG investing helped prepare Gillian Stein to become CEO of Henry’s

Gillian Stein (BCom’00)’s great-grandfather founded the Toronto-headquartered electronics business Henry’s in 1909, but she never envisioned becoming the company’s CEO. Growing up, she had seen how stressful running the company could be for her father Andrew, who had a heart attack at the age of 47. “I always had a ton of respect and passion and admiration for the business but it wasn’t something I wanted for myself,” says Stein. “I changed and the business changed.

On December 29th, for the first time in her role as Governor General of Canada, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon announced Order of Canada appointments and promotions. Among the 135 honorees is Professor Alejandro G. Marangoni (B.Sc.(Agr)’87), the Canada Research Chair in Food, Health and Aging at the University of Guelph.
